Finding the best products to care for your sensitive skin can be a trying task. Although sensitive skin is prone to redness, irritation, dryness and inflammation, the right skin care regimen can make a difference. Keep your skin happy by finding the right balance of ingredients in the products you use every day.

Go Gentle on Cleansers

One of the worst things you can do to sensitive skin is to aggravate it with scrubbing beads and other harsh ingredients. Gentle cleansers, either in cream or gel form, work best on all types of sensitive skin. They remove excess dirt and oil without causing irritation. Avoid products with fragrance, preservatives and dyes to prevent rashes and possible allergic reactions.

Tone It Down

Toner is an additional step in the skin care routine, and it can be one of the trickiest types of products to use if you have sensitive skin. If you have acne, a salicylic acid-based toner may reduce the inflammation associated with blemishes. If you don't have acne, avoiding acid and alcohol in your toner.

Hydration Balancing Act

Aside from a cleanser, a moisturizer is the most important part of your daily skin care routine. It seals in water to keep your face from drying out. Acne-prone skin can benefit from a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer, although a moisturizer with tea tree oil may help prevent blemishes. For rash-prone skin, choose face-protecting creams that are allergy tested. Choose a daytime moisturizer with sunscreen to protect your face from sun damage that causes premature wrinkles.

Sensitive Face Extras

All skin types can benefit from an occasional mask, as well as some form of spot treatment. If you don’t choose the right extras, you can undo any benefits of your sensitive skin care basics. Masks made with chamomile, cucumber and green tea can soothe rashes, while preservative-free mud masks are suitable for acne-prone skin. As a rule, perform a patch test with any new product. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends testing the product and waiting up to 48 hours to see how your skin reacts. Test on your arm instead of your face.
