A family is like a team. There must be communication for the team to operate smoothly. Family dynamics play a role in successful communication. Personalities, communication skills and situational circumstances play a role in interactions between family members. The lack of communication in a family environment can lead to dysfunctional family relationships.
Family Structures
Family members have different roles. They range from the leader, most often a parent whose role is to lead and protect the group, to the children whose roles vary depending on birth order and personalities. Purdue University explains, “Each of these roles carries with it different responsibilities and expectations. But sometimes one person sees his or her roles and responsibilities in one way, while others see them very differently. Different perceptions and expectations can lead to a great deal of confusion and frustration.”
Parent-Child Communication
Lack of communication between parents and children leads to problems related to everything from school to dating. Communication difficulties between a child and parent can contribute to the child's rebelliousness. When your child rebels, it is important to establish an active line of communication. Ineffective or negative communication between parents and children lead children to believe they are unimportant, ignored or misunderstood, according to Center for Effective Parenting. They also see their parents as unhelpful and untrustworthy.
Spousal Communication
Communication problems between spouses lead to misunderstanding and suspicion. These feelings have a way of compounding if poor communication continues. They lead to jealousy, accusations and arguments about everything from money to child raising issues. Depression-Guide.com explains that communication is important in spousal relationships. Otherwise, the lack of communication will increase misunderstandings, and your relationship may deteriorate.
Siblings
Relationships between siblings can be rewarding and enjoyable. However, poor communication can cause arguing, fighting and sibling rivalry. The ability of siblings to build healthy relationships with each other depends on good communication. Teaching children to express anger safely and appropriately is important. It is vital to encourage cooperation between siblings rather than competition, and value each child's uniqueness, explains the University of Florida.
Improving Communication
Good communication between family members aids in a harmonious family environment. Active listening causes others to continue listening and participating in your conversation, reports Purdue University. Being an active listener will demonstrate your interest in what the other person is saying, and you should use verbal and nonverbal communication. Nonverbal cues add to your conversation. Engage yourself in the conversation in a positive way by smiling and leaning toward the speaker. Show concern about what the other person is saying. Do not be judgmental when talking with your children. Avoid preaching, lecturing and sarcasm.
