Natural at home remedies can be used for lightening dark skin. You may already have many of the ingredients in your pantry for some simple and effective masks. To be most effective, skin lightening masks should be applied daily. Be aware, however, that home remedies for skin lightening have not been clinically proven to be effective and you should use caution when trying them. .
Mask One
Mix oatmeal with yogurt and tomato juice to create a thin paste. Apply over the skin and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse the mask off with cold water. Mask Two
Mix 1 tsp. each of powdered milk, honey and lemon juice plus a 1/2 tsp. of almond oil. Apply over the skin and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing. Lemon juice contains natural bleaching properties; however, the American Chronicle advises treatments with lemon juice can make the skin photosensitive.
Mask Three
This mask requires some dried orange peels, which can be obtained by setting fresh peels out in a sunlit south-facing window until fully dried. Grind the dried orange peels then mix with yogurt. Apply the mixture to the skin. Leave on for 15 minutes and then rinse the mixture off. Apply daily or on alternate days with other skin lightening masks until desired skin tone is reached. This mask can also help reduce acne blemishes, marks and scarring.
Mask Four
Mix a tbsp. of gram flour (chickpea flour) with 2 tsp. raw milk, a pinch of turmeric, and two to three drops of lime juice. Leave on for 15 minutes after applying and then rinse. Home Remedies recommends repeating daily for four weeks and then maintaining with once per week treatments.
Mask Five
This mask is one of the simplest and most cost effective. Soak four almonds overnight in water, and then drain the water when you're ready to make the mask. Grind the almonds with milk to make a fine paste. Apply the paste over your face and neck, leave this mask on overnight and rinse off with cold water in the morning. Home Remedies recommends doing this mask daily for 15 days, and then twice a week after that. This can be used as your evening mask while you do another skin lightening mask in the morning.
