MayoClinic.com reports that Viagra is a medication prescribed for men who have problems maintaining an erection or who are sexually impotent. According to the Urological Sciences Research Foundation, Viagra is regularly used by 20 million men globally, and 20 percent of men over age 40 in the U.S. have tried it. While there are side effects linked to using Viagra, they are usually short lived. These long-term side effects according to DailyMed, a National Institutes of Health website, include anemia, chest pain, joint stiffness and inflammation and bladder inflammation.
Decreased Red Blood Cell Levels
DailyMed reports that anemia can result as a side effect of Viagra. As defined by MayoClinic.com, anemia is the condition that occurs when an individual has decreased levels of red blood cells. Since red blood cells are responsible for transporting oxygen around the body, individuals usually exhibit unusual fatigue and weakness due to decreased oxygen.
Tightness and Pain in the Chest
Dailymed reports that long term usage of Viagra can result in the feeling of pressure and heaviness in the chest. This occurs due to decreased blood flow available to the heart, thus depriving it of adequate oxygen. The individual experiences a squeezing chest pain and tightness.
Bladder Inflammation
According to DailyMed, bladder inflammation can result from long-term usage of Viagra. This occurs because of infection seen in the bladder. Due to the purpose of Viagra and the connection between the bladder and the penis, infection can easily spread. This is commonly a bacterial infection such as E.coli that can affect the urinary tract.
Joint Stiffness and Inflammation
Joint stiffness and inflammation can be seen as a result of long-term Viagra use, according to DailyMed. This condition is also known as arthritis and can affect several joints in the body, including the knees and wrists. The Urological Sciences Research Foundation reports that in some rare occasions, long-term use of Viagra can result in vision problems. Some individuals can experience visual distortion where a blue-green shade is seen.
