What is Acerola Used For?

There are many different vitamins and nutrients that are taken on a daily basis to preserve the body and it keep it in good working order. Acerola is a lesser-known substance that is high in vitamin C. But don't let the lack of popularity fool you. This tiny red fruit has many uses and an equal amount of benefits to the body.

Skin

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps promote a substance in the skin called "collagen." Collagen gives the skin its elasticity and keeps it from breaking apart. Acerola is used as an ingredient in skin care products to stop or reverse the aging process.

Heart Help

There are many factors that can lead to coronary artery disease such as a bad diet, smoking, stress and being sedentary. Acerola is used in conjunction with soy and alfalfa extracts to synergistically enhance their effectiveness as a treatment for coronary artery disease.

Liver Support

Acerola originated in the Yucatan area of Mexico. Early uses for the fruits were to treat dysentery and to enhance the function of the liver.

Immunity

In order to fend off colds, germs, infections and diseases, you need to have a good immunity. Because acerola is high in vitamin C, it is used in a supplement to boost immunity. These are generally in tablet form by themselves or in a multi-vitamin. But a word of caution should be taken: Overdosing on vitamin C supplements can lead to diarrhea.

Multiple Uses

In Brazil, the juice from the acerola fruit is as common as orange juice is in America, and the fruit itself is eaten by the handful. The juice and the fruit are both used to reduce inflammation, flush water out of the system, heal wounds, support the function of the heart and to reduce the symptoms of rheumatism, diabetes, anemia and tuberculosis.

Replacement

There are some medications that are used to treat conditions that rob your body of vitamin C. Tetraclycline-based antibiotics, corticosteroids like Prednisone and various contraceptives are a few examples. It is in these situations that acerola is used to put back the lost vitamin C.

Diseases

Parkinson's disease is a condition that attacks the nervous system, causing the body to go into uncontrollable tremors. There is no known cure for it, but acerola is often used as a treatment option.

Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease that also has no concrete cure. It causes the mouth and genital area to break out in oozing blisters that can become red and irritated. These blisters can appear, then disappear for a while without notice. When there is an outbreak, acerola is taken orally in tablet form as a treatment.
