When you shave your legs, you may develop razor burn bumps. These bumps are the body's natural reaction to the irritation caused by shaving. The symptoms of razor burn include a red rash in the area that was shaved and small bumps. In severe cases, ingrown hairs that cause razor bumps, or pimplelike blemishes, may also be present. If you notice razor burn bumps, stop shaving until the razor burn bumps go away. Refraining from shaving gives your skin a chance to heal from the irritation that shaving causes. You can also take other steps to rid yourself of razor burn bumps.
Step 1
Wear loose bottoms that let your legs stay cool and sweat-free. Razor rash is irritated by heat and the salt in sweat. To combat this, choose cotton or other natural fibers. Some synthetic fibers that pull moisture away from the skin are also suitable.
Step 2
Soak your legs in a bathtub of plain cool water. Cool water helps alleviate irritation and inflammation. If you must lather up while you are in the tub, choose a gentle soap that is fragrance free to keep further irritation at bay. Applying cool packs or cool wet towels to your legs is another option if taking a full bath isn't possible.
Step 3
Put over-the-counter hydrocortisone onto any areas that itch. Try not to use this product too much. Medline Plus notes that it may discolor or dry out the skin.
Step 4
Apply a heavy moisturizing cream to your legs. Petrolatum products are one such heavy moisturizer. Aloe vera is another possible moisturizer. If your skin is sensitive or acne prone, choose a product that claims to be nonacnegenic or noncomedogenic, since these aren't likely to clog the pores.
