An increase in environmental awareness and concern has stimulated consumer increase in and demand for shampoo products that have natural ingredients and eco-friendly production. Loma shampoo is a proprietary product that is produced exclusively at the Loma Pearatin facility in Monroe, Washington. The Loma shampoo line is diversified and contains formulations that can be used for normal, dry, brittle or color treated hair.

Aloe Vera Gel

Loma shampoo contains over 30 percent organic aloe vera gel. Aloe vera has properties that are proven effective in cleansing and moisturizing the hair and scalp. According to the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, topical aloe vera is considered to be "possibly effective" in the treatment of psoriasis.

Although the aloe plant looks like a cactus, it is actually a member of the Lily family. The plant is native to Africa, and for centuries and was used by Ancient Egyptians to heal and moisturize the skin and scalp.

The chemical basis for the properties of aloe vera have been evaluated scientifically. Aloe vera contains carboxypeptidase, salicylate, and magnesium lactate that may act to reduce inflammation and itching. Aloe vera gel in known to inhibit thromboxane A2, which is a powerful constrictor of blood vessels. This is the reason why aloe vera is thought to increase microcirculation. Increased microcirculation is good for nutrition of hair follicles and healing of scalp irritations.

The content and purity of the aloe vera contained in Loma shampoo has been certified by The International Aloe Science Council.

Essential Oils

Loma shampoos are scented with essential oils rather than synthetic fragrances. According to Aromaweb.com essential oils are distilled directly from the plant and contain the true essence of the plant. Because they are very concentrated, only small amounts are needed for their scent to be noticed. Essential oils are used in alternative medicine as aroma therapy, which uses plant essences to induce a feeling of calm, relaxation, alertness, etc. Therapeutic effects are said to be felt when the molecules from the essential oil enter the lung and are absorbed into the blood stream. Essential oils may be better tolerated than synthetic fragrances.

Product Examples

All Loma shampoos are rich in aloe vera. Several types of Loma shampoos are marketing specifically for their essential oil content. Loma shampoos called "Awareness," "Perspective," "Mango," and "Objective" are scented with orange and tangerine oils, pure Oregon peppermint oil, mango, and cranberry serum respectively. According to Treasuredlocks.com, orange oil has a "comforting and warming effect," and is helpful for dry skin. Peppermint oil is considered to be anti-inflammatory, and its scent is said to be "vitalizing and uplifting." Marketing for Hydrating Crème Shampoo, Nourishing Shampoo, Therapeutic Scalp Shampoo and Nourishing Moisturizer do not have an essential oil/ aromatherapy focus.
