Bad breath, or halitosis, is commonly caused by bacteria in the mouth and on the tongue. Poor oral hygiene can lead to bad breath including not brushing teeth properly and not flossing between teeth to remove food. Other causes include smoking, excessive talking, sinus problems as well as more severe illnesses such as cancer and stomach disorders. Mouthwashes, gums and mints have all been used to treat odors in the mouth. However, there are many at-home herbal remedies that can have the same effect. Home remedies use a variety of herbs and items commonly found in your kitchen or grocery store.
Parsley and Mint Chews
Fresh parsley can eliminate bad breath. Chew on a sprig after meal time or throughout the day. Parsley is easy to grow in containers for easy access. Peppermint is another herb that is easy to grow and can be freshly picked and popped into the mouth. Herbs must be fresh and not dried.
Spices
A variety of spices can be chewed on to refresh your breath. Cloves, fennel and anise seeds can be tucked into the corner of the mouth. Allow saliva to moisten the spices, and chew on them similar to chewing tobacco. Place small amounts in plastic bags when you are on the go.
Aloe Vera Rinse
Cut open a stalk of aloe vera plant. Freshly squeeze the gel out of the plant. Mix with a small amount of honey and water. Swish solution in mouth, and then spit. Repeat as necessary.
Coriander Rinse
Boil water and add several coriander leaves. Allow to steep for 10 minutes. Remove leaves and allow solution to cool. Rinse mouth with leaves, similar to using a mouth wash.
Fenugreek Tea
Boil a cup of water and add Fenugreek, or methi, seeds. Allow to steep for 5 minutes, then remove the seeds. Sweeten with honey. Drink the tea to remove bad breath and odor from the mouth.
