A cervical collar, also known as a C collar or neck brace, is a medical orthopedic device used to support a portion of a patient's spinal cord, neck or head area. According to the Colorado Comprehensive Spine Institute, it is used to treat head traumas, neck injuries and chronic medical conditions. A cervical collar can also serve as a therapeutic treatment by helping to realign the spinal cord which relieves pain. It is important, however, to consult a doctor to determine whether a cervical collar will benefit a specific condition.

Traumatic Neck or Head Injuries

A cervical collar is routinely applied after a serious head or neck injury. This helps to stabilize the injured person's cervical area such as the spinal cord and skull, preventing further injury. It's also beneficial in reducing the possibility of spinal damage, paralysis or death.

Recovery

A neck brace is often used during recovery from traumatic head or neck injuries and after spinal surgery. It immobilizes the injured areas and releases stress off that part of the body. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, doctors advise patients to wear the device until the healing process or treatment ends.

Whiplash and Therapeutic Usage

Frequently, cervical collars are used to treat neck and spinal medical conditions which may include spinal cord alignment, whiplash and sprains. The Ohio Medical Center reports that whiplash results when spinal tissues are injured. It is commonly treated with a soft collar. In addition, doctors often include physical therapy and exercise to accelerate the recovery process.

Cervical Radiculopathy

Tumors, disc herniation and other traumas can lead to nerve damage which causes cervical radiculopathy. In the past, doctors often corrected this condition with surgery. According to Spine Universe, more physicians are using cervical collars, however, to successfully treat cervical radiculopathy along with rest and exercise. A physician who specializes in spinal health can provide an accurate evaluation.

Neck Pain

Cervical collars are sometimes used for pain management under the supervision of a trained physician. It is difficult to identify the main causes of neck pain and treatment options. Therefore, an accurate assessment cannot be made by simply wearing a neck brace to correct random neck pain. It is best to seek consultation from a doctor regarding wearing a cervical collar in order to be prescribed an individual treatment plan.
