The feelings of excitement and anxiety that come with the onset of labor can be intense. You may not have much time or energy to put together all of the items necessary to have a successful and comfortable hospital stay for you and your new family. Preparing, organizing and packing your hospital bags ahead of time will help you feel ready whenever labor may start. Your packing list will include everything from paperwork to post-labor essentials.
Documentation
Be sure you have packed all of the proper documentation that may be requested by the hospital in an accessible location, such as a zippered outer pocket on your suitcase. Items to include are your health insurance card, a birth plan that dictates your wishes for labor and delivery, hospital registration forms, a list of family and friends to call after the birth and picture identification.
Aids for Comfort in Labor
Many women find it comforting to bring items from home that they can use or wear during labor and delivery. Most hospitals have no issues with this practice. Such items may include a robe, nightgown or nursing gown, several pairs of socks, a pillow, slippers, light reading material, soothing music and something to play it with, aromatherapy oils and light snack items such as crackers and water.
Post-birth Necessities for You
When your baby arrives, you will want to have items on hand to aid in your comfort and allow you to better interact with your new baby. Such items include toiletries, nursing bras and breast pads, a nursing pillow, several pairs of underwear, several self-adhesive sanitary pads for post-labor drainage, soft washcloths and towels, a breastfeeding book, a baby book and clothes to wear home.
Items for Baby
Although the hospital will typically provide basic baby care items such as disposable diapers and blankets, you may feel more comfortable if you provide some of your own supplies, such as a receiving blanket, hat, wipes and booties. You will also want to bring a going-home outfit for baby. Be sure you have an infant car seat with proper head support and that the base for the seat is properly secured in your vehicle. If you have your baby during cold weather, bring extra blankets, mittens and a warm sleeper.
Items for Partner and Siblings
If a partner or other family member will be in attendance for your birth and subsequent hospital stay, pack items for them. Examples of essentials include cash for food at the hospital vending machines or cafeteria, a camera or camcorder, change of clothes, toiletries, snacks, pajamas and a watch with a second hand for monitoring contractions. If siblings will be in attendance for the birth or visiting the hospital frequently, consider packing items for them as well, such as books, toys, coloring supplies, a portable movie player, a special camera and a gift for them to present to their new sibling.
