Large-looking pores can be caused by sun exposure, acne or the natural aging process. Though there is no way to permanently reduce pore size, there are several things you can do at home to reduce their appearance. Wash your skin daily to prevent oils or debris from blocking pores, exfoliate weekly to remove the top layer of dead skin and use an astringent such as witch hazel that causes pores to constrict. You should include a sunscreen and a non-comedogenic cream to your daily routine to protect and moisturize your skin.
Exfoliate
Step 1
Pour the oatmeal onto the cookie sheet that you have placed across your sink to prevent the oats from clogging your drain.
Step 2
Scoop up oatmeal into each hand and begin to rub it on your face to exfoliate and remove the top most layer of skin. Use a circular motion and be as gentle as possible. Continue for a couple of minutes, picking up more oatmeal as needed.
Step 3
Using a towel, wipe as much of the oatmeal and dust off of your skin as possible. Expect your face to be a little pink and feeling only slightly raw.
Daily Wash and Tone
Step 1
Use warm water to wash your face. Lather the soap up with a washcloth or hand and rub gently.
Step 2
Rinse off the soap with cool water by splashing your skin for at least one minute. Dry your skin completely.
Step 3
Moisten a cotton ball with witch hazel and apply to your skin. Avoid any open sores or wounds as this will cause it to sting. Allow it to dry before applying sunscreen, moisturizer or make-up.
Tips and Warnings
- Avoid washing your face more than twice a day or exfoliating more than once a week to prevent irritation. You can substitute ground almonds for the oatmeal. Try not to get either into the sink drains as they can cause clogging. Lining the sink with a towel can help.
- When exfoliating, use a very gentle hand. If severe redness or bleeding occur, discontinue use and speak to your physician.
