Excessive sun exposure or harsh winter winds can strip your skin of moisture. Dry, flaky skin looks dull and lifeless and often itches. Nourishing your skin from inside and out is the key to silky, smooth skin. You can exfoliate and moisturize your skin with a sugar or salt scrub purchased in a pharmacy or spa, or you can create your own at home. Creating your own body scrub allows you to customize it with the scents and oils you want.
Step 1
Measure 2 cups of salt, sugar or ground coffee beans into a mixing bowl. You can also use dry oatmeal as an exfoliant if your skin is especially dry.
Step 2
Pour in 1/2 cup of olive oil or another oil of your choice into the bowl. You may wish to use jojoba, almond, avocado or apricot kernel oil. Stay away from mineral oil, which is refined and can further dry the skin.
Step 3
Add 2 tbsp. of honey and up to 10 drops of essential oil to scent the mixture. Stir and pour into a glass jar.
Step 4
Step into a hot shower and massage the scrub onto your body in a circular motion. Leave it on your skin for a few minutes before rinsing.
Step 5
Add essential fatty acids to your diet to soften skin from the inside. Ground flaxseed, omega-3 enriched eggs, avocados and nuts are all high in fatty acids. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your entire body hydrated.
