Foods That Trigger Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, commonly referred to as IBS, is a health condition that affects the large intestine, according to MayoClinic.com. IBS is often uncomfortable, but does not cause damage to the colon. Symptoms of this condition include bloating, pain or cramping in the abdomen, gas, diarrhea, constipation and mucus in the feces. These symptoms can range from mild to severe and may come and go. Foods don't cause IBS, but many can trigger the discomfort associated with the disorder.

Fat

Foods that are high in fat can alternately result in diarrhea or constipation in people who suffer from IBS. Foods that are deep fried should be avoided to prevent this from occurring. According to MayoClinic.com, eliminating fatty foods from the diet will result in long-term relief. Items to avoid include french fries, onion rings, fried meats, bacon and anything that has been deep fried. Baking foods is an alternate cooking method that isn't as likely to trigger IBS symptoms.

Raw Fruits and Vegetables

According to the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, avoiding raw produce can reduce the chances of IBS related diarrhea being experienced. Specific culprits include cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower. Any fruits or vegetables that result in loose stools should be considered a trigger food and need to be avoided. However, for people who more often suffer constipation as an IBS symptom, eating fresh fruits and vegetables can help alleviate the problem. A doctor can assist someone who is experimenting with diet to relieve IBS symptoms.

Dairy Products

Dairy foods can be an IBS trigger even for people who aren't lactose intolerant, according to HelpForIBS.com. Particularly troublesome are full fat versions of milk, cheese and yogurt. However, some people who suffer from IBS also find that low fat dairy foods can trigger symptoms. This is because they contain whey and casein, two proteins that can cause severe digestive distress. Other things to avoid include ice cream, whipped cream, cream cheese, sour cream, butter and frozen yogurt.

Red Meat

Red meat is often high in fat and can trigger symptoms of IBS. According to HelpForIBS.com, eating red meat can result in diarrhea or constipation in people who suffer from IBS. This is because animal products are low in fiber and water and have higher levels of fat. Foods to avoid include, hamburgers, hot dogs, steak, cold cuts, sausage and any other meat that comes from cows, pigs, sheep, goats and deer. More white meat, like that which comes from chicken and turkey, is generally better handled by someone who has IBS.
