What Are the Benefits of Eucalyptus Oil?

Eucalyptus is a flowering herb that is native to Australia. The Australian aboriginals originally used this herb as a source of water in the arid outback, according to Michael Castleman, author of "The Healing Herbs." However, European settlers in Australia discovered in the 1840s that this herb may possess medical properties. The herb's healing powers come from its oil, which is contained in the plant's leaves. Check with your doctor before using eucalyptus oil to treat any condition.

Antibacterial

Eucalyptus oil contains two main chemical compounds, called citronellal and citridorol. According to Julia Lawless, author of "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Essential Oils," these two compounds work together as antibacterial agents. A third compound, called eucalyptol, may also provide mild antibacterial properties. Apply eucalyptus oil topically to minor scraps and cuts to reduce the risk of bacterial infection.

Antifungal

According to Lawless, eucalyptus oil may also offer antifungal properties. The chemical compounds in this oil may help destroy fungal skin infections, including candida and tinea versicolor. Apply eucalyptus oil to affected areas of the skin to help clear fungal infections.

Cold and Flu Treatment

Eucalyptol may be useful for relieving the symptoms of cold and influenza, according to Castleman. Eucalyptol may help loosen phlegm that builds up in the lungs and throat. It may also help destroy the influenza virus, speeding the healing process. Add two or three drops to steaming water and inhale the steam to enjoy the congestion-loosening benefits of eucalyptus oil.
