Hopping on your bike and cruising to your destination isn't just an ideal way to beat the traffic. It's also one of the quickest ways you can burn calories during any type of exercise. Biking at a pace of 15 mph isn't always possible during city riding, but take your bike to a rural area and you'll have no trouble sustaining this pace -- and burning hundreds of calories in the process.

Pedal Vigorously for a High Calorie Burn

Bicycling at a pace of 15 mph requires a vigorous effort, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services. The organization's website notes that a 130-pound person who bicycles between 14 and 15.9 mph burns about 590 calories in an hour. A 190-pound person who bicycles for an hour at the same speed burns about 863 calories.

Strengthen Your Body and Mind

"Best Health" magazine notes that bicycling can lead to physical and mental health benefits. The publication reports that in addition to building a number of major muscles, including your quads, glutes and hamstrings, bicycling for just a short duration can lessen the symptoms of depression and anxiety. Bicycling is also ideal for its low impact and can be an effective exercise in your battle against fat.
