Calories and Serving Size
The Wrigley company, manufacturer of Starburst Fruit Chews, considers eight individual fruit chews as equal to one serving, which contains 160 calories. Each individual piece of candy, therefore, provides approximately 20 calories. Starburst Original, Tropical and FavREDS Fruit Chews all share the same nutrition profile. Other Starburst Fruit Chews have slightly different nutrition profiles like Fruity Slushies, which contain 240 calories per package.
Starburst Original Fruit Chews are high in sugar. A full serving of the candy contains 33 grams of total carbohydrate with no fiber but 23 grams sugar, as well as 3.5 grams of total fat, 3 grams of which come from saturated fat. The chews contain no other nutrients.
A 2012 NBC News Health report notes that government researchers say that kids are consuming too much sugar – and that most sugar consumption occurs at home not at school. Overall, about 16 percent of the calories in the average American child’s diet come from added sugars, according to a study released from National Center for Health Statistics that tracked added sugar consumption by children and teens from 2005 to 2008.
