A cruise is an all-inclusive vacation, and includes all the food you can eat. There are regularly scheduled meals, snacks and midnight buffets. You may also be tempted by tropical drinks that contain even more calories. This can result in added pounds that you need to get rid of when your vacation is over. You can lose weight after a cruise if you commit to going back to a healthy routine.
Step 1
Return immediately to your exercise routine if you have one. Start one if you don't. Most vacationers give up their workouts while they are cruising. It's easy to put off exercise even longer when you return home. You need to get back into your routine immediately to help you lose cruise weight. If you don't normally exercise, start working out for at least 30 minutes five times a week. You can do something as simple as walking or get an exercise DVD to do at home.
Step 2
Cook healthier meals. Even if you usually pay attention to what you eat, be a little more careful in the weeks after your cruise. Small steps, like cutting back on sugar or fat, will support your after-cruise weight loss.
Step 3
Choose healthy between-meal snacks. The options on a cruise ship tend to be indulgent and fattening. Switch to things like fruit, vegetables and nuts that won't get in the way of your weight loss efforts. Eating snacks between meals keeps your appetite under control.
Step 4
Get back to your normal sleep routine as soon as possible. It's easy to get out of your routine on a cruise when you stay up late to see shows and go to clubs, and then sleep in the next morning. Michele Stanten of Prevention Magazine says that fatigue affects hormone levels and can make you feel hungry and promote fat storage. Keeping yourself well rested once you get home from your cruise will help you lose weight.
Tips and Warnings
- You can make it easier to lose weight after your cruise if you minimize your weight gain during your vacation. Stay active and visit the gym if possible. Some cruise ships even offer fitness classes. When you are indulging, try to control your portions.
