Omega-3 fatty acids are an increasingly popular supplement and not only with the adult crowd. Marketing vitamins and supplements to kids is common, and the purported health benefits of omega-3s makes it an increasingly popular choice with parents. L'il Critters is one of several companies that manufacture and market omega-3 supplements for kids. Though they're marketed to a younger age group, the potential side effects are similar to adult-branded omega-3 supplements.

Mercury Poisoning

Fish naturally contain omega-3 fatty acids, and current concerns about water pollution and mercury poisoning translates also to the omega-3 supplements derived from fish. The L'il Critters Omega-3s supplements contain sardine, anchovy, mackerel and tuna, so mercury poisoning concerns are valid. But the company states that their brand of Omega-3 Gummy Fish are thoroughly tested for heavy metals and they stand by a pure product containing no mercury or lead. According to MayoClinic.com, omega-3 supplements derived from fish appear not to contain mercury.

Gastrointestinal Upset

Taking fish oil derived omega-3 supplements can cause a fishy aftertaste, bad breath, burping, nausea, indigestion and diarrhea. In low doses, these side effects are generally small. L'il Critters recommended dosage for their Omega-3 Gummy Fish is two gummy vitamins per day. The company also recommends storing the supplements in a cool, dry location or in the refrigerator for a better tasting product. Freezing supplements or taking them with meals may reduce gastrointestinal side effects, according to MedlinePlus.

Allergy

Because L'il Critters Omega-3 Gummy Fish contain fish, anyone with a fish allergy should avoid this product. Any allergy symptoms that come from eating fish may occur with taking supplements that contain fish. Rash and skin allergy have been reported in a small number of cases, according to MayoClinic.com, but this may come from a potential food allergy. Those with an allergy to nuts should also be cautious because L'il Critters Omega-3 Gummy Fish contains 63 mg of alpha-linolenic acid, ALA. This byproduct of omega-3 fatty acid is also found naturally in walnuts.

Possible Interactions

Although omega-3 fatty acid supplements are generally safe in low doses, up to 3 g per day, some report interactions with other medications and other health conditions. There are concerns that omega-3s may cause a small spike in blood sugar, so diabetics may be affected. Interactions with medications for high blood pressure have been reported. Medications and herbs, such as ginkgo or garlic, that can slow blood clotting may be affected because omega-3s may increase the risk for bleeding, according to MedlinePlus. Although these conditions are not typical concerns for children, any child taking medication or with health problems should consult a doctor before taking omega-3 supplements.

Reduce Vitamin D Levels

Fish oil supplements can lower levels of vitamin E in the body, according to MedlinePlus. It's unclear whether fish oil causes less vitamin E to be absorbed by the body or if the body uses up more vitamin E as a consequence of fish oil intake. L'il Critters Omega-3 Gummy Fish nutrition labels lists two vitamins contain 1.5 IU of vitamin E.
