If you have a full schedule of classes, you may not have the time or money to commit to an expensive gym membership. And if you're eating all of your meals at a dining hall, it may be even more challenging to stay in shape. Instead of falling victim to the freshman 15, start a fitness program that you can maintain in your dorm room. Consult a doctor before starting a new fitness routine.

Fitness Ball

Buying a fitness ball is an effective way to maintain your figure on a budget, says MayoClinic.com. Replace your desk chair with a fitness ball to work your abs and core while you're doing homework. Balance your butt on the fitness ball with your feet on the floor and do crunches to strengthen your core and improve your balance.

Dining Hall Substitutions

Although you may be tempted to eat unhealthy foods at the dining hall, try to include a variety of different foods in each meal. Substitute foods high in saturated fat and refined carbohydrates for healthier options. Replace fried foods with baked and grilled foods, notes the Center for Young Women's Health. Swap white bread and white rice for whole-grain bread and brown rice. Steer clear of sweetened drinks and sodas and opt for water or seltzer instead.

Run Around Campus

If your school is located on a traditional campus, you may have running trails throughout the area. Ask the gym or the student activities office for a map of trails in the area. Comfortable running shoes are all you need to start your workout, notes KidsHealth.org.

Run to and from class if you can't find time to exercise. However, don't run alone in the dark, and if you must run at night, wear reflective clothing and bring a friend.

Fitness Class

At some schools, you may be able to take a fitness class for course credit. Not only will this afford you the time to exercise regularly, you may also meet new exercise buddies. The Center for Young Women's Health recommends dancing or weight lifting classes to stay fit.

If you are unable to join a fitness class this semester, get involved in intramural sports. This is a good way to stay social and make friends while still getting a workout.
