Hypothyroid disease is a condition caused by the inability of the thyroid gland to produce sufficient thyroid hormones. Because thyroid hormones regulate many aspects of metabolism, hypothyroidism causes many symptoms related to fatigue and weight gain. Several types of food contain chemicals known as goitrogens, which interfere with the thyroid gland's ability to synthesize hormones, and may contribute to hypothyroidism. No studies have yet proved that eating foods containing goitrogens directly causes hypothyroidism, and you should consult with your doctor before adjusting your diet to treat hypothyroidism.

Brassica Vegetables

Brassica vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and cabbage. These Brassica vegetables all contain natural chemicals that can act as goitrogens and potentially interfere with thyroid function, explains the University of Michigan Health System. Some studies have indicated that cooking these vegetables, particularly Brussels sprouts, may inactivate the goitrogens.

Green Leafy Plants

Several of the green leafy plants, including spinach, kale and mustard greens, also have been reported to contain goitrogens, the University of Maryland Medical Center reports. Not eating these plants may help to improve thyroid function.

Tubers

Many tubers are rich is goitrogens, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Turnips, sweet potatoes and cassava are all tubers that are known to contain goitrogens and eating them may possibly contribute to hypothyroid disease.

Beans, Nuts and Seeds

Soybeans are another source of goitrogens. Soy products may also interfere with the absorption of thyroid hormones by the rest of the body, in addition to the production of these hormones, the University of Maryland Medical Center explains. Peanuts, pine nuts, linseed and millet have also been reported as foods that are high in goitrogens.
