Wobble boards are foot platforms that are rectangular or circular in shape that sit on top of an inflated disc or ball-like structure. Sometimes referred to as balance boards, wobble boards are fitness equipment that help develop flexibility in your pelvis and trunk, and help with core strength and balance, according to the Dyspraxia Foundation. Exercises can be performed on a wobble board while sitting, kneeling or standing. There are different types of wobble boards to choose from.
Spherical Wobble Board
A spherical or round wobble board can move in all directions and is used to help to improve range of motion, ankle strength and confidence, according to Fitness Zone. It is a good board for any type of user from beginner to the advanced level. The spherical wobble board is good for all age groups, including children. It is a basic and simply designed board that is round and sits atop an adjustable dome in the middle.
Double Wobble Board
A double wobble board consists of two separate balancing platforms for each foot, providing motion in both the vertical and horizontal planes. According to Fitness Zone, this type of wobble board is good for providing balance, stability and coordination. The double wobble board is good for an advanced user and is not suitable for someone just starting out on a wobble board.
Rocker Wobble Board
A rocker wobble board is usually square or rectangular and is called a rocker because instead of balancing in a circular fashion like the other wobble boards, it rocks in only two directions---either forward and backwards or from side to side. This type of board does not provide the full range of motion like the other wobble boards and is suited for beginners and is the easiest to use.
Size and Material
Wobble boards come in a variety of sizes and are made of either wood or plastic. Wooden boards will last longer and can handle heavy use, as opposed to the plastic boards. The larger the size of the wobble board, the easier it is to use. Larger boards are good for beginners and as you become an advanced user, you can move down in wobble board size.
