Aloe vera has been used medicinally for thousands of years for a broad range of ailments, particularly skin irritations, wounds and constipation. Its leaves contain a clear gel that is used topically, and the green part of the leaves surrounding the gel is used to make a substance called latex, or aloe juice, that is taken by mouth. Aloe vera juice may cause potentially severe adverse effects so consult with your doctor before using it medicinally.
Gastrointestinal Effects
Aloe vera juice can cause gastrointestinal problems, including stomach pain and cramps. According to Drugs.com, you should not take aloe vera juice in daily doses greater than one gram for a prolonged period because this may increase the risk of more serious side effects, such as bloody diarrhea and weight loss. Aloe vera juice can irritate your bowels and should be avoided if you have intestinal problems, including Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis or obstruction.
Blood Sugar Effects
Aloe vera juice may lower your blood sugar levels. If you have diabetes, you should be cautious about taking aloe vera juice because your blood sugar levels may not be in control. Aloe vera juice may also enhance the blood-sugar-lowering effects of diabetes medicines, such as glyburide or insulin. For these reasons, your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medications.
Electrolyte Depletion
When taken orally, aloe vera juice acts like a stimulant laxative which may deplete some important electrolytes in your body, such as potassium. Low potassium can cause symptoms such as weakness, muscle cramps, stomach problems, and irregular heart rhythm, possibly leading to serious health problems. Low potassium may also affect how certain heart and blood pressure medicines work, such as digoxin and water pills, and increase their risk of side effects.
Other Effects
According to Drugs.com, taking aloe juice for long periods of time may cause muscle weakness, heart problems and blood in your urine. Also, taking large daily doses of aloe vera juice may over time cause kidney problems, possibly leading to kidney failure. Do not take aloe vera juice if you are pregnant, because it may cause miscarriage. Also, avoid aloe vera juice if you are breast-feeding.
