Gastritis is inflammation of the lining of the stomach general caused by acid erosion of the protective mucous layer. The symptoms include a burning or gnawing pain in your stomach and upper abdomen and an uncomfortable full feeling after eating -- regardless of the amount eaten. Nausea and vomiting are also common symptoms. Several factors may contribute to gastritis including dietary supplements such as potassium. If your doctor has you on a potassium regimen and it is causing gastritis, there are some ways that you can deal with your symptoms.
Step 1
Eat a piece of bread or another starchy substance with the potassium supplement. The bread can absorb stomach acid and help prevent the potassium supplement from irritating your stomach.
Step 2
Take a liquid potassium supplement. The liquid supplement will absorb easier and clear your stomach faster than a pill, thereby reducing your risk of gastritis.
Step 3
Take an over-the-counter acid neutralizer with your potassium supplement. These drugs prevent the stomach acid from irritating your stomach lining.
Step 4
Consult with your physician about taking an over-the-counter or prescription acid blocker. These drugs reduce the amount of stomach acid you produce and you should only take them for a limited amount of time. Your physician can determine if you should take these drugs and for how long.
Tips and Warnings
- Most individuals get enough potassium from diet or from the small amount present in multi-vitamins. Exceptions may be individuals with kidney disease or those on diuretic therapy. Consult your physician before starting potassium supplementation. If you continue to experience gastritis, consult your physician for alternatives to your current potassium supplements.
