Constipation is not uncommon in toddlers. During the toddler stage, you may be trying to potty train and help your child become more in tune with his body. Constipation can put a halt to this progress. It can also be very painful and frustrating. Prunes are a natural laxative that can relieve your child's symptoms.
Amount
The amount of prune juice to give your child with constipation depends on his age. For a baby age 6 month, dilute 2 tbsp. of prune juice. You can give a toddler up to 8 oz. of prune juice. You can also try straining prunes or making prune puree if your child will not drink the prune juice.
Symptoms
There are symptoms that indicate your toddler is having trouble with constipation. The first sign may be tummy troubles. If your child complains of severe pain in the abdominal region, it can be a signal that the intestines are not working right. If your child suffers from frequent urinary tract infections or if her genitals look red and irritated, this may be a sign as well. Watching your child hold back the urge to go by squeezing her buttocks and wriggling around can also indicate constipation as he may be ignoring the need to go. Finally, if your toddler has infrequent very large bowel movements, this may be a sign of constipation.
Causes
Technically speaking constipation occurs when stool fails to move through the intestines causing it to become dry and hard and difficult to pass. There are habits that can increase the likelihood of constipation. A lack of fiber in the diet can cause hard stools and constipation. Not drinking enough fluids can also cause constipation. Drinking prune juice not only encourages the intestines to move waste through, but it also helps hydrate and is a good source of fiber.
Complications
Regular or long-term bouts of constipation can cause weak intestinal muscles. This means your child's intestines cannot properly move food waste through, which can cause ongoing constipation. See your child's pediatrician if adding fiber, fluids and encouragement don't work. Your child may need to use stool softeners to encourage healing of the intestinal muscles.
