Cellulite--a common occurrence in women and men--is a result of the expansion of fat cells in the skin's connective tissue. As fatty deposits in the subcutaneous tissue collect, bulges form, resulting in the dimpling that we hope to disguise and eliminate. Cellulite can be caused by poor circulation that prevents the body from eliminating toxins. Waste materials are not swept out of the body properly and instead harden into fat. Other causes can be from fluid retention, weak veins, a faulty diet, incorrect breathing habits, stress or changes in hormonal levels.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is an age-old home remedy for helping to reduce symptoms of cellulite. A popular recipe is to place 2 tbsp. organic apple cider vinegar along with a teaspoon of honey in an 8-oz. glass of pure water. If taken every day, you may see a decrease in cellulite due to the dissolution of fatty deposits. You can also apply the vinegar topically by adding three parts vinegar to one part massage oil. Massage this formula into the cellulite-ridden area twice a day for possible results.
Caffeine
Another organic treatment for cellulite is using caffeinated coffee grounds that are still warm from use. Rub the grounds into your cellulite and then wrap the area with plastic wrap and leave it on for about 20 minutes, then rinse off the residue. If you place paper on your bathroom floor, cleanup is easier at the end. You can also grind up the coffee grounds and mix them with a neutral body lotion. Rub the lotion into the area, wait for 20 minutes, then rinse off in the shower.
Essential Oil
Juniper oil is an essential oil used to treat cellulite, among other conditions. Many spas use this oil in their cellulite treatments. You can mix 30 drops of the pure oil with 4 oz. olive oil, massage into your skin and make your own cellulite spa treatment.
Epsom Salt Baths
Epsom salt consists of magnesium and sulfur. It has been used throughout the ages for treating a plethora of conditions, such as flushing toxins out of the body and improving the ability to absorb nutrients. Used in the bath, you can add 2 cups Epsom salts to your bath water along with juniper oil to smooth the skin and help improve circulation, which helps reduce the effects of cellulite.
Other Treatments
Massage and body wraps can be an effective and natural way to treat and decrease cellulite. Exercise such as weight training and cardiovascular movement helps to tone muscles and decrease body fat. Drinking plenty of water helps to flush out toxins and keep the organs toned and functioning at optimum levels. A healthy diet consisting of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and other types of fiber help keeps the digestive system working properly, relieves constipation, and rids the body of excess waste. Brushing the skin while dry with a vegetable fiber brush helps to stimulate circulation and break up fatty tissue. Reducing salt intake helps to prevent edema, which can exacerbate the effects of cellulite.
