Does the Candida Diet Allow Whole Grain Bread?

When candida overgrows in your body, this yeast can cause muscle and joint pain, fatigue, sugar cravings, gastrointestinal problems, depression and repeated vaginal infections in women. To get rid of this excessive yeast, the candida diet eliminates most carbohydrates, such as sugar, starchy vegetables, grains and fruits, as well as dietary sources of yeast, such as fermented cheeses, fermented vegetables and alcohol. Although whole grains are recognized as being healthier than refined grains, they are not suitable for the candida diet.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are made primarily of starches and sugars. Both starches and sugars break down into sugar that can become food for the yeast in your digestive tract. If your diet is rich in carbohydrates, you can worsen your candida infection and make it difficult to get rid of it. Starchy vegetables, such as potatoes, corn and yams, as well as fruit, sugar and gluten-containing grains like the wheat used to make pasta, breads, breakfast cereals, cookies and baked goods, can feed a candida infection. The only allowed carbohydrates on the candida diet are small amounts of carbohydrates from nonstarchy vegetables, such as leafy greens, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, eggplant and mushrooms, as well as non-gluten grains from millet, rice, rice bran and oat bran.

Whole Grain Bread

Most whole grain breads contain wheat or other gluten-containing grains, which are not acceptable for the candida diet. If you have a candida overgrowth and want to get rid of this yeast or better manage your symptoms, avoid all breads, whether made from refined or whole grain flour. You can opt for gluten-free bread made from allowed gluten-free grains, such as rice or millet flour. Avoid gluten-free breads made from potato flour or containing other nonacceptable ingredients for the candida diet, such as additives and preservatives. It may not be possible to find whole grain bread that fulfills all of these criteria at the grocery store or even at health food stores.

Candida Diet Bread

You can make your own whole grain bread with allowed ingredients while following the candida diet. Grind about 1/2 cup of gluten-free oats, which is a whole grain, in a blender and mix with an equal amount of water and two beaten eggs. Bake like a crepe in coconut oil in a frying pan. Add oat bran, rice bran, vanilla extract, cinnamon or other natural flavorings to make your own candida-approved whole grain bread. You can use this whole grain bread to make sandwiches or to eat as is to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Other Bread Substitutes

Eliminating whole grain bread can be difficult but can help you get rid of your candida overgrowth. You can obtain all the fiber you need by including generous amounts of nonstarchy vegetables at each meal and using vegetables as a bread substitute. For example, prepare a grain-free pizza on portobello mushroom caps; use grilled eggplant slices to make grain-free lasagna and wrap your grain-free sandwich with lettuce leaves.
