Hillary Rubin, the fashionista-turned-health-guru, developed a comprehensive health-centered diet after learning she had multiple sclerosis. Hillary Rubin's diet is based on the idea that certain foods heal your body while others cause harm. Although Rubin originally developed the diet for sufferers of multiple sclerosis, many of the principles, such as avoiding processed foods, appeal to individuals across the dieter spectrum.

Eat Low-Fat Protein

One of Hillary Rubin's core dietary principles includes eliminating dietary toxins, which come in many forms, including red meat such as beef. Hillary Rubin's diet discourages meats high in saturated fats, including dark poultry and red meat, in favor of wild fish with low levels of mercury, such as salmon, tilapia and scallops. Rubin, herself, doesn't eat any meat except wild fish, but excluding red meat is more important to her dietary mantra than becoming vegetarian.

Eliminate Addictive Toxins

According to Hillary Rubin's diet, addictive substances, such as alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana and caffeine, reduce your body's optimal level of functioning. Rubin says such addictive toxins detract from your consumption of healthy food and pollute your immune system and vital organs. Her diet says craving these addictive substances for weeks, if not months, after halting consumption is normal until your body begins utilizing other nutrient-dense sources of nutrition such as whole, unprocessed foods.

Eliminate Processed Foods

Rubin's diet rids the body of the chemicals and additives found in junk food and fast food, such as corn syrup, refined sugar, and artificial colors and flavors. The human body, she says, cannot function optimally when ingesting these unnaturally complex, toxic ingredients. Eliminating these harmful ingredients in place of whole foods, such as nuts and fresh vegetables, fuels your body with the high-quality energy it needs. Says Rubin, "I see the body like a car, and fuel does make a difference. You wouldn’t put a low-grade gasoline in a Masarati or Bentley, so why do this with your body?"

Eat Pure Sources of Vital Nutrients

Rubin's diet advocates balanced, pure nutrition by eating unprocessed, unrefined foods. This means consuming fresh, organic fruits and vegetables in place of syrup-soaked canned fruits or salted, preserved vegetables. Raw nuts and beans replace refined heavy starches such as pasta and bread. Rubin encourages individuals with gluten or lactose sensitivity to eliminate wheat, yeast or dairy products if necessary. At the very least, she says, reduce your consumption of processed and high-fat dairy, such as ice cream and hard cheeses.
