Senile dementia is a progressive disease of the elderly in which brain cells waste away due to several factors. Lack of blood supply from artherosclerosis is a primary cause of dementia. British homeopath, Dr. Andrew Lockie explains that all forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s, are characterized by one or more symptoms such as memory loss, cognitive problems, confusion of identity and difficulty following conversations or reading comprehension. Reasoning may be impaired with a lack of interest in life and personality breakdown often results. A variety of homeopathic medicines have been found helpful.

Baryta Carbonicum

Baryta Carbonicum is used to treat those suffering from dementia and degenerative conditions of the circulatory system, such as artherosclerosis, which affects blood flow to the brain. It is effective in treating memory loss, mental impairment, timidity, childish reactions to various circumstances, indecision and physical and mental fatigue, according to William Boericke in his book, “Materia Medica and Repertory.”

According to Lockie, Lycopodium offers relief to dementia patients who have become forgetful, make errors in speaking, reading and writing, lack confidence and experience mental confusion and frustration. The remedy may be helpful for those who become angry and lose their tempers due to frustration, causing them to become bossy, obstinate, tyrannical and difficult for caregivers and family members, according to Boericke. An alkaloid found in Lycopodium, which is also present in the Chinese herb Huperzia serrata has been show to significantly assist the memory and improve some cognitive defects in older patients, according to the National Institutes of Health on PubMed.com.

Frans Vermeulen in his book, “Synoptic Materia Medica I,” explains how the remedy Conium is used to treat the elderly for depression, shyness and fear of being alone. The remedy treats memory loss, as well as relieving the mental confusion and loss of cognitive function that sets in as a result of grief over the loss of a spouse. Conium often helps people regain the ability to concentrate and focus.

Boericke explains that homeopathic Phosphorus helps improve the circulation in people with artherosclerosis increasing blood flow to the brain. It's used to stimulate cognitive function, reduce memory loss and help a person overcome the fear of death. It helps with absent-mindedness, confusion, daydreaming and anguish over being alone, according to Vermeulen. Phosphorus also helps people with dementia who feel like their brain is tired and doesn’t work properly, according to Boericke.

Alumina helps Alzheimer's patients who have difficulty expressing their ideas and thoughts, make mistakes when speaking and writing, are easily panicked and suffer mental confusion with reference to their identity, according to Vermeulen. In other words, they forget who they are and can also forget where they are.
