How to Cure Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Naturally

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, or CTS, is a common disorder among those who use computers for long periods of time, or perform another type of work with repetitive motion of the hands and wrists, such as in the construction industry. It is the result of compression of the median nerve of the wrist, and causes numbness, tingling and muscle weakness in the hand and fingers. The conventional medical treatment includes physical therapy, cortisone injections and surgical intervention called carpal tunnel release. Injections and surgery are invasive procedures, and often provide only temporary relief. Fortunately, there are natural treatment methods that are effective and relatively inexpensive.

Natural Treatment Options

Step 1

Change your workspace to be more ergonomic. Many modern office equipment supplies are now designed to be more ergonomically correct. In other words, they are more in line with proper anatomical function and human physiology. One solution that may provide immediate relief of CTS symptoms is the ergonomic, or "split" keyboard. This keyboard is laid out so that when the fingers rest on the keys, the wrists are in a neutral position, rather than angled inward. This relieves tension on the median nerve and can provide immediate relief of the numbness and tingling in the fingers many CTS patients suffer while typing. It does take some getting use to, but well worth the time and effort. Ergonomic mice and desks are also available.

Step 2

Provide the body with proper nutrition and supplements. Over time, CTS can cause damage to the nerves of the wrist. B vitamins, and especially B12, help to repair nerve damage and improve nerve function. Experts from the University of Maryland Medical Center recommend several supplements, including taking a multi-vitamin, 500 mg of Vitamin C and a B Complex tablet each day. Additionally, they list Bromelain (40 mg) and Turmeric (300 mg) for pain and inflammation. These herbs are generally considered safe and can be found in many natural health food stores or online.

Step 3

Practice yoga and meditation. These are safe, effective ways to stretch the body and relieve stress and tension. You need no special equipment other than a solid chair. Begin by sitting up in a comfortable position. Inhale and reach overhead, bringing the hands together. Exhale, and press the palms together over the heart, dropping the wrists down. Relax the shoulders, and hold for several breaths. Repeat two to three times. Next, while sitting upright on the edge of the chair, bring the hands down at the sides, pressing the hands flat onto the chair next to the hips. Press the body away from the chair, pinching the shoulder blades together. Drop the chin down and hold for several seconds while breathing deeply. Rest, and repeat two to three more times. Begin relaxation by sitting comfortably in a chair, or lying flat on the floor. Close the eyes and clear the mind. Inhale through the nose, filling first the belly, then the chest, allowing the shoulders to rise slightly. Exhale slowly, relaxing the shoulders and chest and squeezing the stomach back toward the spine. Breathe deeply for 10 to 12 breaths.

Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid excessive amounts of caffeine and soda. Caffeine can deplete B vitamins, and further exacerbate the problem. Supplementing with B vitamins can actually improve energy levels and decrease the need for caffeine and stimulants. Massage, acupuncture and chiropractic treatments may also offer relief.
  • Always consult your doctor or healthcare practitioner before beginning an exercise program or herbal supplements. Never discontinue medications or medical treatment without discussing the options with the treating physician.
