The adrenal gland produces cortisol, a steroid that assists the body's use of food, prevents inflammation and affects the body's immune system. According to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, underactive adrenal glands, or Addison's disease, is a condition in which the adrenal glands do not produce needed amounts of cortisol. Symptoms of underactive adrenal glands include fatigue, dizziness, rapid pulse rate, dark skin, black freckles, nausea, weight loss and dehydration. Cortisol injections, medications or both may be prescribed.

Complex Carbohydrates

Natural health expert Andrew Weil, M.D., suggests a low-glycemic diet regime, or a diet that supports healthy blood sugar balance, to help remedy underactive adrenal glands. Whereas low-glycemic foods have a mild effect on blood sugar, high-glycemic foods may have an intense or spiking effect. Complex carbohydrates such as whole grains are low glycemic and rich in nutrients. They can help support healthy blood sugar levels as well as overall physical wellness. Limit intake of processed carbohydrates, such as white flour and sugar-based breads, pasta, cereals and snack foods that can cause blood sugar disturbances and offer little nutritional value, Instead, incorporate a variety of whole-grain equivalents, such as 100 percent whole-grain bread, whole-grain pasta, long grain brown rice and whole-grain-based snacks and cereals on a regular basis for best potential results.

Hydrating Foods and Beverages

According to the National Adrenal Diseases Foundation, avoiding dehydration is crucial for people with underactive adrenal glands. Fruits and vegetables provide water as well as an array of helpful nutrients, such as antioxidants, which can help the body fight and prevent diseases. Broth-based soups are also hydrating food choices and may serve as a valuable option for those who have decreased appetite as a result of their condition. Incorporate a variety of these foods and drink water, naturally sweetened juices, herbal teas or low-fat milk rather than sugary soft drinks or caffeinated coffee or tea regularly for best results.

Protein-Rich Foods

Experts at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center College of Medicine suggest a diet rich in protein for people with adrenal insufficiency. Protein provides amino acids, which contributes to lean tissue and muscle development in the body. Foods rich in protein can also help support blood sugar levels. Foods highest in protein include meat, poultry, fish, dairy and soy products and legumes. Choose primarily lean protein sources, such as boneless, skinless poultry, fish, low-fat dairy products and plant-based protein sources, such as beans, lentils and other legumes most often because red and processed meats are often high in saturated fat. Consume protein-rich foods at most meals as a part of healthy, balanced diet for best results.
