Cellulite is made of visible fat just below the skin's surface. Even slim people can have it, as everyone has layers of fat, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Sometimes, collagen fibers that connect to a person's skin stretch, pull tight or break down, which makes the fat cells bulge out. Cellulite shows up most often on the thighs, buttocks and hips, but may be present other places such as the stomach. There are many factors that seem to bring on cellulite, including heredity, sex, race, age and body weight, according to "International Journal of Cosmetic Science." No amount of weight loss or type of treatment has proven effective in eliminating cellulite, according to the university, and there's no quick fix that works long-term, advises the Mayo Clinic. However, there are ways you can diminish cellulite.
Step 1
Stimulate your lymphatic system. While some of the causes of cellulite still are not known, advises the International "Journal of Cosmetic Science," impaired lymphatic function is considered one of the most important factors. Boost your lymph system by practicing good posture, using dry brush massage and especially by exercising. Exercise is important because muscle movements stimulate lymph flow, according to LymphNotes.com. Eat a good balance of lean protein, like fish or skinless chicken, healthy fats like olive oil and low-glycemic index carbohydrates, advises nationally known nutritionist Ann Louise Gittleman, author of "The Fat Flush Fitness Plan." Do not wear tight clothing or sit for long periods of time.
Step 2
Eat to balance hormones, another important factor in controlling cellulite, according to "International Journal of Cosmetic Science." Lower your intake of carbohydrates, as this will cause a hormone imbalance of insulin and estrogen and progesterone. Carbs react mainly with fat-storage hormone insulin. Make sure you eat protein at every meal. Protein has a steady effect on blood sugar, rather than spiking it. Cut out trans fats, processed vegetable oils, non-organic dairy products and soy products because they instigate hormonal imbalance, according to All Women's Talk. Add in healthy fats like olive oil and fish oil, fresh and fermented fruits and vegetables and coconut products. Cut out sugary sodas and reduce intake of black tea and coffee.
Step 3
Improve your body's circulation. Impaired microvascular circulation is another top factor that can lead to cellulite, according to the International "Journal of Cosmetic Science." Exercise regularly to boost circulation--anything from walking to yoga is effective. Exercise also will help reduce the total amount of body fat you have, notes the Mayo Clinic. Massage and hydrotherapy, or taking a hot and cold shower, will also improve circulation. Eat plenty of garlic, onions, ginger and cayenne, advises HealthGuidance.org.
Step 4
Cleanse your liver. Detoxifying this organ is essential if you want to get rid of unwanted cellulite and fat because the liver will not metabolize fat properly when it is overloaded, advises Gittleman. Minimize intake of chemicals like artificial sweeteners and processed foods, choosing whole organic foods instead. Boost intake of antioxidant-rich foods like fruits like cranberries and blueberries and vegetables like broccoli. Use 25 to 150mg of a standardized grape seed extract one to three times a day and 300mg turmeric, three times daily, for their antioxidant power, advises University of Maryland. You also can use 80 to 120mg milk thistle twice daily, which has the flavanoid silymarin that can protect the liver from toxins and regenerate liver cells, advises The Detox Specialist. Also drink lemon juice in hot water and dandelion tea daily, advises Gittleman.
Step 5
Drink plenty of water, advises the University of Maryland. This will help your lymphatic system and kidneys, which remove waste products from the body, work properly. At minimum, take in eight 8-oz. glasses of water daily. Add another glass of water for each hour of light activity.
