Cardio exercises, also known as aerobic exercises, are activities that cause a person's heart rate to increase. Generally, cardio exercises are activities in which a person feels like he is getting a good workout through sweating and a change in heart rate. Playing sports, jogging, swimming and walking are all examples of cardio exercises. Participating in regular exercise plays a role in overall health.

Improves Cardiovascular Health

Cardio exercise can improve overall health, but especially cardiovascular, or heart health. The Jan. 7, 2003, issue of the American Heart Association publication "Circulation" explains that some of the benefits of regular exercise that make the heart healthier are a lowering of LDL or "bad" cholesterol levels, an increase in "good" HDL cholesterol and a beneficial drop in blood pressure. The Mayo Clinic explains that 30 minutes of exercise every day can lead to a longer life, in addition to one that is healthier due to the beneficial ways exercise strengthens the lungs and blood flow. ScienceDaily adds that cardio exercise can cause the heart to enlarge, or strengthen, in a good way. This beneficial enlargement of a person's heart muscle due to exercise is called hypertrophy.

Protects Against Disease

Aerobic exercise on a daily or almost-daily basis can help stave off diseases, ranging from osteoporosis to diabetes, according to the Mayo Clinic. People who exercise regularly have a decreased risk of bone loss, according to "Circulation," which can be especially helpful to people as they age. Back pain may also be reduced as a result of cardio exercise, due to an increase in both flexibility and muscle strength. Jonathan Myers, Ph.D., reported in his "Circulation" article that the lowered risk for diabetes is due to the increase in insulin sensitivity that results from regular exercise.

Aids Weight Loss

Participating in cardio exercise can play a part in losing weight and maintaining an ideal body weight, explains the Mayo Clinic. Cardiovascular exercise burns calories. When a person burns more calories than he takes in, he sheds extra pounds. Exercise alone will not always lead to weight loss, but combining walking, jogging or another aerobic activity with a healthy, low-fat, fiber-rich diet will make weight loss easier for many people.

Improves Mood

Cardio exercise benefits mental health as well as physical well-being, according to the Mayo Clinic. Physical exercise can increase levels of the brain's "feel good" chemical called serotonin, which can help a person feel happier and less depressed. The physical effects of exercise, including muscle toning and weight loss, can play an important role in boosting a person's self-esteem and body image. Physical exercise is a natural sleep aid as well, which leads to a more positive outlook on life.
