The majority of cases of cervical cancers are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), states the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC explains that when cervical cancer is caught early, it is highly treatable and the prognosis is good. This is why it is important for all women, but especially those with HPV, to monitor themselves closely for cervical cancer symptoms. However, cervical cancer sometimes does not display any symptoms at all, so it is equally as important to receive pap tests on a regular basis to monitor for potential cervical cancer cells.

Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding

Any type of bleeding from the vagina that is unusual or abnormal can be a sign cervical cancer may be present. Women that have any bleeding that occurs between regular menstrual periods, bleeding after going through menopause, or heavier or longer-lasting menstrual periods should talk to their doctors, recommends the National Cancer Institute. Bleeding that occurs after sexual intercourse, a pelvic exam or douching should also be discussed.

Increased Vaginal Discharge

An increase in the amount of vaginal discharge can also be symptom of cervical cancer. A New York Times Health Guide indicates this discharge may be pink, brown, red or white and may also be watery or pale. It can also have a foul-smelling odor.

Pain

The Mayo Clinic states that pelvic pain may also indicate cancer of the cervix. Pain during sexual intercourse may also be present.

Advanced Cervical Cancer Symptoms

If the cervical cancer goes undetected for a long period of time and the cancer gets to be advanced, additional symptoms may present themselves. These symptoms may include loss of appetite, loss of weight, back pain, leg pain, fatigue, heavy vaginal bleeding, leaking urine or feces from the vagina, bone fractures or a single swollen leg, according to a New York Times Health Guide.
