A series of Hydroxycut products, a popular line of dietary supplements designed to promote weight loss and increase energy, were recalled by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) in May of 2009. However, consumers continue to purchase and utilize the supplements, putting themselves at risk for a variety of potentially serious side effects.
Liver Problems
One potential side effect experienced by those who've used Hydroxycut is injured liver. The FDA states that while this side effect isn't common, it has been shown to occur in individuals who follow dosage instructions on the supplement's bottle. Symptoms of liver injury include jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), abdominal pain or tenderness and brownish, discolored urine. Liver injuries vary in seriousness. In some cases the liver heals on its own once the cause of the injury, such as Hydroxycut, has been removed. In most severe liver injury cases, medical treatment, such as surgery, may be required. According to a CNN report, at least one case of liver failure in association with Hydroxycut has been reported that necessitated liver transplant.
Digestive Irregularities
Digestive symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, light-colored stools and loss of appetite may occur for those who take Hydroxycut supplements. Such symptoms vary in severity and often dissipate once one stops taking the supplements. If you currently take Hydroxycut and experience one or more negative side effects, the FDA advises that you stop taking the supplements immediately and seek medical attention.
Fatigue
Fatigue and weakness are additional potential side effects of Hydroxycut supplements. Since most individuals who take them do so in order to improve energy, this side effect may also prevent the intended results altogether. Those who take Hydroxycut and partake in physical activity may find that their ability to exercise may be hindered.
