Many people feel that having wrinkled and sagging facial skin is an inevitable part of getting older. While that is true to some extent, there are certain precautions that can be taken to reduce the wrinkles and sagging skin that you may experience, such as facial exercises. When done properly, facial exercises can retighten skin. This can save you a lot of money and pain that often are a part of procedures or other facial skin treatments.
Step 1
Combat crow's feet, or wrinkles at the edge of eyes, by doing a simple winking exercise. To do this effectively, partially close your eye. Avoid shutting your eye fully and tightly, which may actually increase the crow's feet. Hold the wink for one second, open your eye and then repeat the wink for the other eye. Depending on your comfort level, you can do 50 reps once or twice a day, alternating between eyes.
Step 2
Fight wrinkles along the front of the neck, where some of the earliest signs of aging show up frequently. Start this exercise in a sitting or standing position. Tilt your head back slightly, keeping your chin and nose centered. Press your tongue firmly to the roof of your mouth. This will tighten all the muscles along the front of your neck. Keep your tongue pressed to the roof of your mouth and lower your chin toward your neck. To check if your form is correct, make sure the muscle at the top of your neck directly below your chin (known as the platysma muscle) feels tense as you raise and lower your head.
Step 3
Do scalp exercises, which are designed to treat forehead wrinkles. Note that this is the most difficult exercise to do. There are two basic movements involved. Begin by raising and lowering your eyebrows, using the muscles at the front of your head. Next, contract the muscles at the back of your head, which will cause your ears to move back and forth. If you're having difficulty with the second motion, then lay down with your head on a pillow and pull your ears back. The pillow helps you gain more control as you practice, since it will help you figure out if you're contracting the correct muscles. Try to repeat the exercise for a few minutes and then build up to roughly five minutes. The best gauge of results is what works for you and feels comfortable.
Tips and Warnings
- Begin your facial exercise routine by moisturizing your face with a quality moisturizer or even splashing some water on your face. It is advised not to perform these exercises with a dry face.
