Women who develop an upper-lip mustache should visit their doctor to find out if they have developed a thyroid problem, if they have polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) or if they have developed a hormone problem leading to their condition. Developing an upper-lip mustache is also one sign of hirsutism, or excess hair growth. You can get rid of the excess hair yourself.
Step 1
Stretch your upper-lip skin gently between your forefinger and middle finger, and then grip each hair with tweezers, and pull the hair out. Try to pull out the entire hair, including the root. Plucking lasts from three to approximately eight weeks.
Step 2
Use an epilator by gently running it along your upper lip, so you catch each hair in the teeth. The epilator pulls out several hairs at a time, which makes the process go more quickly than plucking one hair at a time. As with plucking, removing your facial hair with an epilator lasts from three to approximately eight weeks.
Step 3
Prepare hair wax according to the manufacturer's instructions. Apply wax to your upper lip with a small spatula. Press a cloth strip firmly on the wax, and pull it off quickly, so it pulls all the lip hairs by the roots. Waxing lasts approximately three to six weeks.
Step 4
Use prescription eflornithine cream to change the consistency of the hair on your upper lip from coarse to soft and fine. Read the package instructions. This cream is called an antiandrogen, which works by blocking androgen production in your body. Because it reduces this hormone, you should also take birth control pills, so you don't get pregnant. This cream can be harmful to an unborn baby.
Tips and Warnings
- For waxing to work efficiently, the hair on your upper lip should be approximately 1/4-inch long.
- Don't shave your upper lip. You'll end up with short, coarse stubble, which makes your upper lip appear to be even more hairy.
