Aloe's healing properties have been recognized for centuries. It was used medicinally in ancient Egypt, where it is represented in stone carvings. Although aloe is widely used as a topical agent, you should talk to your doctor before using aloe vera gel to treat any medical conditions.
Burn Healing
The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) recommends aloe vera gel to treat mild burns to the skin. Aloe contains soothing properties that help the burned area heal more quickly. Aloe is also good for sunburn over large swaths of the skin and is already included in some sunscreens to help soothe the skin.
Wound Healing
Aloe vera gel can also be used to promote healing in minor scrapes and wounds. The NCCAM recommends using it for superficial injuries only, as it can impede the healing of deeper surgical wounds.
Psoriasis Treatment
The Mayo Clinic points out that aloe vera gel can be used to treat psoriasis. It recommends applying the gel to the skin three times a day. This application should be repeated for five consecutive days per week, for up to four weeks depending on results.
Genital Herpes Treatment
The Mayo Clinic notes that the gel can also be used to treat the sores associated with genital herpes. It recommends applying the gel to the herpes sore five days a week. This application should be consistent for two weeks.
