The teething process can be a trying time for both babies and parents. Drooling and irritability are usually common symptoms, along with the baby's desire to put everything in the mouth that he can get his hands on. Many homeopathic remedies are available to help ease the pain and reduce irritability during this time. Homeopathics are safe and effective alternatives to over-the-counter painkillers. Specific remedies are chosen based on the symptoms of the individual.
Aconitum Napellus
More commonly known as Aconite, this remedy is made from the plant wolfsbane. It is very helpful when a fever accompanies teething. Aconite is indicated for use when the baby is very fretful with lots of crying, and/or chewing on her hands and fingers, and waking from sleep violently.
Belladonna
This homeopathic remedy is made from the whole plant, Atropa belladonna. If a child is startled upon waking during teething, this remedy may be useful. The pupils may be dilated and convulsions may occur as a result of the teething process. In these instances, belladonna may be the remedy of choice.
Calcarea Carbonica
Known as calc carb for short, this remedy is made from the mineral compound calcium carbonate found in oyster shells. It is primarily used for concerns of the teeth and bones in infants, children and adolescents. When teething happens slowly accompanied by green, loose stools, calc carb may be just the remedy for this child. It is indicated in cases where there is much sweating from the head along with gums that appear pale.
Calcarea Phosphorica
Calcium phosphate is the chemical mineral compound in teeth and bones that makes them strong. This is the basis of calc phos. When the eruption of teeth is delayed causing pain, the child may benefit from this remedy. It is especially useful if the teeth that come in are unhealthy.
Chamomilla
Derived from the plant Matricaria chamomilla, or Chamomile, this remedy is used to calm gum irritation and irritability that comes along with teething. This is one of the most commonly used homeopathic remedies for teething. It is especially beneficial to calm the nerves when a teething child wishes to be held constantly.
Silicea
This constitutional remedy is most commonly used for children. It is a natural component found in the body as well as the soil. Silicea is indicated when the teeth are slow to come in, along with blisters formed on sensitive gums. Children who benefit from silicea may not be completing their bowel movements, and often have odorous sweating.
