Central retinal vein occlusion, also called CRVO, affects around 60,000 people in the United States each year, Weiss Eye Research Foundation reports. CRVO occurs when blood flow in the central retinal vein becomes blocked, forcing blood and fluid to back up in the blood vessels, damaging the retina. If areas of the retina become oxygen deprived, or ischemic, abnormal fragile new blood vessels form that can cause retinal bleeding, detachment or severe vision loss. Several factors can increase the risk of developing CRVO.
