CLIFFORD SEWELL, MD: I'm Dr. Clifford Sewell. A brief message about the Heimlich maneuver. The Heimlich maneuver is performed in cases of emergency if you were to witness someone choking. We've all heard of the Heimlich maneuver, I'm here to demonstrate it today. If you're in a restaurant, you see someone chocking, immediately call 911 or yell for someone to call 911 as you're about to perform the Heimlich maneuver. The sooner you perform and are able to assist the patient the better. Brain damage and coma can occur within just a few moments of the onset of choking. This is a demonstration of the Heimlich maneuver. [PH] Cheska has been kind enough to demonstrate the choking patient. She is not really choking, however, so don't be too alarmed. In the Heimlich maneuver, you want to place your both arms underneath the arms here, place your right fist at the upper part of the stomach below the sternum underneath the rib cage, place the other hand over the top, squeeze tightly with an upthrust and lift with your legs, like that, and the maneuver can be repeated several times until successful. In the meantime, 911 should have already been notified by another good samaritan.
