Weight Training for Bike Racers

Cyclists typically engage in resistance training, or weight training, during the winter months, the off season. Weight training builds muscle strength and endurance, both key elements needed to sustain a fast speed over long distances. Although much of the training should focus on the lower body, Gregg Fuhrman, MPT, CSCS, recommends a training program that includes exercises to strengthen the core and upper body. A strong upper body helps stabilize the lower body, which allows for more force into the pedals.
