Nose piercings, like other types of body modifications, have increased dramatically in popularity over the past several years. The "Washington Post" quotes Jeffrey S. Dover, a Boston-based dermatologic surgeon, as saying that the increase in popularity is at least partly attributable to pop musicians and other celebrities who have piercings. Although nose piercings have become more accepted in mainstream society, getting a nose ring still carries important risks.

Infection

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) lists infection as a primary risk of nose piercing. A study referenced by Rutgers University Health Service and Texas Tech University Health Services Center polled 744 college students from 18 different universities in the United States and Australia. Of those who responded, 46 percent said they experienced site infections as a result of body piercings, including nose piercings. Evidence of infection included swelling, pus, redness and skin sensitivity.

Necrosis

Although rare, necrosis is another danger of nose piercing. Princeton University defines necrosis as the death of live cells in a localized area. In other words, the skin cells die. Typically, necrosis occurs because of an interruption of blood supply or due to infection. If you experience necrosis, you must have the affected area surgically removed to prevent the possibility of further infection.

Septal Hematoma

The AAFP lists septal hematoma as a third risk of nose piercing. A septal hematoma is bruising or bleeding of the septum, which is the formation of cartilage and mucous membrane tissue that divides the nostrils. While a septal hematoma is easily corrected if it is treated early, it can become infected if left untreated. According to the National Institutes of Health, a neglected septal hematoma can also cause a hole to form in the septum, leading to possible collapse and cosmetic deformities.
