Acid reflux is a common gastric condition characterized by the backflow of digestive juices from the stomach into the esophagus. Left untreated, acid reflux can develop into a more serious condition referred to as GERD, or gastro- esophageal reflux disease. Slippery elm is a centuries-old herbal remedy that can be used to treat and prevent acid reflux.
Identification
Slippery elm, or Ulmus rubra, also referred to as red elm or Indian elm, is a medium-sized deciduous tree native to Canada and the United States. The gray-white inner bark from the trunk of the slippery elm tree is used for medicinal purposes. It is collected in the spring from trees that are at least 10 years old, dried and then crushed into a powder that is used in herbal remedies.
Active Constituents
The principle constituent of slippery elm is a mucilage that is found in the woody fibers of the tree's bark. Upon contact with water, this mucilage forms a gelatinous substance that has a soothing, healing action on the irritated and inflamed cell tissue. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, this herb also contains antioxidants that have an anti-inflammatory effect on the esophageal lining.
Mechanism of Action
Slippery elm has demulcent properties that are beneficial in the treatment of acid reflux. Taken internally, slippery elm forms a soothing protective coat over the mucous membranes of the esophagus. This serves to relieve the irritation and inflammation of the esophagus caused by the acidic stomach contents. Slippery elm also stimulates increased mucous production that helps to lower excess acidity.
Formulations
Slippery elm is available as a fine grayish powder that is used to make slippery elm tea. You can brew this herbal tea by steeping 4g of powdered slippery elm bark in 2 cups of boiling water for 3 to 5 minutes. Slippery elm is also available in tincture form as well as capsules or tablets.
Dosage
The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests drinking 2 cups of slippery elm tea three times a day. Alternatively, take 5ml of tincture three times a day. Take 400 to 500mg with a full cup of water 3 times a day for 4 to 8 weeks.
