Dothep is a prescription medication used to treat the symptoms of depression. This medication, which is also marketed under the generic names dosulepin or dothiepin, is a tricyclic antidepressant and works by regulating the levels of certain mood-balancing chemicals in the brain. This medication is not currently marketed within the United States. People should discuss Dothep side effects with a medical professional before beginning treatment.

Dry Mouth or Stomach Upset

People taking Dothep can develop dry mouth or stomach-related side effects during treatment. Stomach upset side effects can include nausea, vomiting or constipation and may occur in conjunction with sore throat, increased thirst or abdominal pain, cramping or bloating. People can limit the severity of these stomach upset side effects by eating a small snack before taking a dose of Dothep. If a severe stomach pain accompanied by vomiting or difficulty urinating develops during treatment, affected people should contact a doctor immediately.

Blurred Vision, Dizziness or Headache

During treatment with Dothep, people can experience unusually blurred or cloudy vision. Blurred vision may also contribute to sensations of dizziness or headache in certain people. People who become dizzy following treatment with Dothep should remain seated until this sensation passes. Attempting to stand or walk during episodes of dizziness can result in injury from tripping or falling.

Sweating or Muscle Twitching

Excessive sweating or unusual muscle tremors can occur as side effects of Dothep treatment in certain people. These side effects can be uncomfortable and should be discussed with a doctor if they occur.

Libido Changes

While receiving treatment with this antidepressant, people can experience changes in their sexual drive or desire. Certain people may be more interested in sex, while other people may experience a decreased interest in sex. People who develop these libido side effects while taking Dothep should seek additional care from a physician.

Skin Discoloration

A red, irritated skin rash can develop across the body as a side effect of Dothep in certain people. This side effect of treatment is typically temporary and will progressively subside with continued use of Dothep. People who develop an unusual yellowing of the skin or eyes -- a condition called jaundice -- should seek medical care immediately as this side effect can indicate a severe reaction to this medication.

People taking this medication may become unusually tired or fatigued. These side effects can negatively impact a person's ability to remain focused or alert while participating in normal daily activities.

Suicidal Thoughts or Behavior

Certain people, especially those under the age of 25, may be at an increased risk of developing suicidal thoughts or behavior while receiving treatment with an antidepressant, such as Dothep. Any significant mood, behavior or personality changes that occur during treatment should be reported to a doctor immediately.

Less Common Side Effects

Less common side effects of Dothep include weight changes, urinary frequency, high blood pressure and other cardiac conditions, restlessness, stroke and altered liver function.
