These days, more and more couples are turning to herbal supplements to address fertility problems. Herbs are all-natural and much less expensive than conventional medical fertility treatments. For best results, consult an herbalist who can direct you to the herbs that are right for you. Also, before taking any herbal supplements for fertility, discuss it with your doctor. Despite being natural, herbs can potentially interact adversely with medications or with other herbs.

Red Raspberry

The leaves from the red raspberry plant are believed to help build the blood lining the uterus (the endometrium) to a suitable thickness, thereby increasing the chance of a fertilized egg implanting there. The herb is also known to help relax the uterus and ease cramping. According to PreconceptionWeekly.com, red raspberry leaf can be taken at any point during the menstrual cycle. The herb is most often found in the form of capsules, tinctures and tea.

Licorice

Licorice root has been used for fertility-enhancing purposes for centuries. The herb has estrogen-like properties and is believed to help regularize menstruation. FertilityHelper.com also reports that it can help boost immunity, decrease inflammation and normalize hormonal levels, thus priming the body for conception. Note, however, that licorice can increase blood pressure and decrease potassium. It is not recommended for anyone with high blood pressure, kidney disease, heart disease, or with a history of stroke. Licorice root is usually found in the form of an extract.

Wild Yam

Wild Yam is a vine native to North America. Although it is reputed to contain natural progesterone and promote the production of progesterone in the body, there is little scientific evidence to support this. According to womenfitness.net, the plant does contain estrogenic properties and can help balance female reproductive hormones. In its natural form, the herb is also believed to help prevent miscarriages that are due to improper hormone balances. Wild Yam can be obtained in capsules or in a cream formula.

Vitex

Vitex is the quintessential fertility herb. The plant comes from the chasteberry tree, which grows naturally in Asia and Europe. Herbalists claim that vitex can help regulate the hormones governing a woman's reproductive cycle and is key in stimulating ovulation. The herb is therefore believed to be especially helpful for women with irregular or absent menstruation. Dr. Randine Lewis In her book, author of "The Infertility Cure," states that vitex can also reduce the production of prolactin, a hormone that in high doses can hinder ovulation. The herb comes in multiple forms, including capsules, tablets, tinctures and tea. Vitex may take three to six months to produce results.
