Herbs That Stop Acid Reflux

Many acid reflux sufferers are looking for alternatives to the daily use of over-the-counter or prescription medications to relieve the pain and discomfort of heartburn symptoms. While many of these medications are very effective, frequent use can raise concerns about side effects. Herbs that stop acid reflux can help alleviate heartburn symptoms in many cases, reducing the need for the use of pharmaceutical preparations. However, it is important to research herbal remedies carefully and discuss them with your doctor before use.

Ginger Root

Ginger root, a common spice used in food preparation, has also been used medicinally for many years. A staple in traditional Asian medicine for hundreds of years, ginger root is used as a remedy for a variety of digestive complaints, including acid reflux. Ginger root can be used in powdered or capsule form, or be prepared as a tea to prevent or ease the symptoms of acid reflux. However, ginger root must be taken with care, as over consumption of this herb can cause gastric irritation. People with certain health conditions are advised to avoid ginger root. If you have a blood clotting disorders or gallstones be sure to speak to your health care provider before trying this herb for acid reflux relief.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Many acid reflux sufferers have found relief from their symptoms with the use of apple cider vinegar. Two or 3 tsp. of natural, un-distilled apple cider vinegar mixed into a glass of water, taken before meals, is said to help some sufferers avoid heartburn symptoms. Since apple cider vinegar is a food product, it is considered safe. However, some side effects have been reported, so discuss its use for acid reflux relief with your doctor.

Orange Peel Extract

According to Alternative Medicine Review, orange peel extract, or d-limonene, has been shown in clinical trials to offer significant relief of acid reflux symptoms. In one study cited in their report, 89 percent of participants reported significant relief after 14 days of d-limonene use, as compared to 29 percent of the placebo group. This herbal remedy is available in supplement form, but as with any treatment, ask your health care provider before using d-limonene to control acid reflux symptoms.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is often used as natural remedy for acid reflux. Its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties ease irritation and pain in the esophagus lining, as well as inhibit acid production in the stomach. The typical dose is an ounce or two of aloe vera juice or gel, taken before each meal. However, internal use of aloe vera can have some side effects. While most are mild, it is wise to consult your doctor before using this preparation.
