How to Lose Fluid Weight

Excess fluid in your body results in swelling, or edema. Heart failure, kidney disease, medications, premenstrual syndrome and pregnancy may result in fluid retention, according to MedlinePlus.com. Your body also may retain fluid if you consume too much sodium or remain in the same position for too long. If you have excess fluid weight, you probably feel swollen and heavy. While dieting won’t help you lose fluid weight, you can take steps to rid your body of excess water.

Step 1

Talk with your doctor if you are taking prescription medications to treat a health problem. Drugs used to treat high blood pressure, inflammation and diabetes can cause water retention, according to the Better Health Channel. The same is true of corticosteroids and birth control pills. Ask your doctor to switch you to a different drug to help you lose fluid weight.

Step 2

Step into a sauna, which will help rid your body of excess sodium, according to DrWeil.com. Spend 10 to 20 minutes in the sauna to work up a good sweat. Drink plenty of water before, during and after your sauna sessions to avoid dehydration, recommends DrWeil.com. While a sauna doesn't necessarily help you lose weight or burn calories, you will lose fluid weight, but only until you rehydrate.

Step 3

Cut down on your sodium consumption. Salt retains water, so reducing your sodium intake will help you lose excess fluid your body might be holding on to. Aside from table salt, limit your intake of canned foods, processed meats and salty snacks, such as potato chips.

Step 4

Drink more water. While this may seem counterintuitive, the less you drink, the more water your body retains. To lose fluid weight, keep your body hydrated by drinking at least eight glasses of water a day. Limit or eliminate beverages with caffeine and alcohol, as they dehydrate.

Step 5

Try natural diuretics. ACEHSA Healthcare Administration and Management recommends eating fruits and vegetables that are high in water content, such as asparagus, juniper berries and parsley. The Better Health Channel recommends such herbal diuretics as dandelion leaf and horsetail, as well as cranberry juice and vitamins B5 and D.
