Overview

If you're looking to make your hair soft and supple, look no further than your kitchen cupboard. Your hair shaft is protected by a cuticle, a layer of "shingles" that preserve the moisture and protein your hair requires. When the cuticle is damaged by heat, sun, chemical processing or wear and tear, your hair can break and become dry, frizzy and brittle. Replace the moisture and reseal damaged cuticles with these readily available cures.

Olive Oil

Reader's Digest recommends olive oil as a restorative: It cleans your hair and removes any buildup that may be weighing your hair down, and it helps to coat the strand. This locks moisture into your hair. According to Reader's Digest, you can use up to 1/2 cup of olive oil in your hair. It works best when you heat it first, then let it soak in for 45 minutes.

Coconut

Curly hair needs a strong, slightly heavy moisturizer to soften and smooth the kinks. Naturally Obsessed and AfriCurl, two blogs about curly hair, both recommend coconut for its natural moisturizing properties. Naturally Obsessed advises that you can work coconut milk into your hair mask. AfriCurl promotes a relaxing hair mask made from coconut cream, coconut oil and plain yogurt. Mix these ingredients with olive oil or use them separately, and leave on for 45 minutes.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar coats your hair, restoring its pH. It can even protect blonde hair from turning green in chlorinated swimming pools. CareFair advises that you can use a vinegar rinse every day to soften your hair and make it shine. Add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to your hair mask, or mix one cup of vinegar with one cup of water and use it to rinse your hair after you remove the mask.

Molasses

Molasses is a humectant, meaning that it attracts and holds moisture to your hair strand and makes hair softer. It also contains some protein to reinforce your cuticle. Add 3 tbsp. of molasses to a hair mask for stronger, silkier hair. For very curly and kinky hair, molasses works well added to your daily conditioner and left in your hair for 5 to 10 minutes.

Egg

According to CareFair, egg yolks add proteins and vitamins to strengthen and soften your hair. You can make a hair mask with two egg yolks, a cup of water and 1 tbsp. of olive oil, or you can incorporate egg yolks into your hair mask. However, if you use eggs as a hair treatment, do not rinse with hot water. This will cook the egg, making it very hard to remove.
