If you rolled out of bed with puffy eyes this morning, you don't have to spend the whole day wearing sunglasses. Puffy eyes that pop up suddenly are usually caused by fluid retention, says MayoClinic.com. If you have chronically puffy eyes, they may be caused by an underlying condition, heredity or age, and may require a doctor's treatment. Otherwise, if your doctor approves, try using home remedies to treat puffy eyes due to fluid retention.

Step 1

Place two spoons in the freezer for half an hour, then remove them. Place the spoons over your closed eyes for 10 minutes.

Step 2

Put two wet teabags over the eyes for five minutes. If you're worried about the tannins from the tea staining your skin, wrap the teabags in clean tissues before touching them to your face.

Step 3

Say goodbye to salty foods. Eating foods with a high amount of sodium, like chips, canned vegetables, popcorn and fast food, may cause puffiness under the eyes. Cut out these foods to reduce fluid retention underneath the eyes.

Step 4

Cut two pieces of cucumber, then place one slice over each eye for 10 minutes. Repeat as necessary throughout the day to reduce puffiness and swelling.

Step 5

Wrap a few ice cubes around a clean towel or washcloth, then place the bundle over your eyes for 10 minutes. The cold temperature will help drain fluid underneath the eyes.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you don't have ice cubes handy, wet a washcloth with cold water and wring it out before placing it over the eyes.
  • Consult a doctor if your puffy eyes are accompanied by any other symptoms.
