When your children are old enough to express their own style, they may ask to decorate their own room. Your kids will likely spend a great deal of time in their bedroom and working together will result in a bedroom they enjoy. There are many ways to change the paint and decor in your children's bedroom, and considering many different options will help you make the best choice.

Step 1

Choose a paint color. Take your children to a local home improvement store and allow them to look at paint samples and narrow down their choices to a few each. Encourage your children to choose the colors they like best, rather than the ones you would choose, recommends Megan Connelly, author of "The Smart Approach to Kids' Rooms." Take the paint samples home and consider how they would look in your children's bedroom before making the final choice. Work with your children to make a choice that everyone will be happy with.

Step 2

Purchase the paint and begin painting the bedroom. Encourage your children to help you so they can take pride in their new space. Jennifer Levy, author of "Kids' Rooms: Ideas and Projects for Children's Spaces," writes that there are a variety of paint techniques you can choose from to make the walls more interesting. You can stencil or stamp pictures that correlate with your children's interests. Levy also suggests painting the ceiling a color of your children's choice or painting a mural on it.

Step 3

Add window treatments, such as curtains or valances. According to Connelly, adding window treatments is an easy way to transform a space. Choose curtains or valences that have similar colors to the paint color you chose for the walls. You can buy window treatments in many stores or you can make them yourself using fabric your children choose together.

Step 4

Add accents to the bedroom. Rugs can liven up the floors in your children's bedroom if they coordinate with the window treatments and paint color, says Connelly. Choose decorative objects that correspond with the color of the room or the interests of your children. Hang pictures on the wall or frame meaningful photographs of family and friends. Levy adds that lighting fixtures can also add to the decor of the bedroom.

Step 5

Consider how the furniture goes with the paint color and decorative accents. Connelly also suggests placing furniture in a way that allows your children to move freely through the room. Adding blankets and pillows can correspond with the new paint color to add to the overall decor of the bedroom. Storage for toys can also be included in the decor, says Connelly, by choosing storage options that coordinate with the color and furniture.
